Support Material
To assist with your school newspaper competition entry, please find following some suggestions on how to make this an exciting event for not only the pupils directly involved, but the entire school. We have also attached some support material that you are welcome to download as need be.
Some suggestions ...
For primary schools:
Making the News 1 : A 10-week integrated unit for Stage Three Making the News: Support material
This year, many primary schools participating in The Herald's School Newspaper Competition will undertake their entry as a whole-class learning exercise using Making the News, a 10-week integrated unit of Stage Three work.
This unit of work was written to satisfy NSW Board of Studies requirements and involves English, HSIE, creative arts and mathematics outcomes.
It guides teachers and students through the production a two-page newspaper, allowing students to learn how the media contributes to contemporary society by bringing critical and timely issues to the community's attention, and providing students with a real-life application for their literacy skills and their understanding of the newsgathering process.
PLEASE NOTE: Completion of the 10-week unit is in no way compulsory. It is meant to support co-ordinating teachers, not create more work!
For primary or secondary schools:
Resource Booklet: Your step-by-step guide to producing an entry in The Herald's School Newspaper Competition Primary schools that wish to participate in the competition as a GATS exercise, interest-group project, teacher/librarian initiative or extra-curricular activity are extremely welcome.
For secondary schools, The Herald's School Newspaper Competition is an extremely relevant and vibrant learning vehicle for English and media studies groups and, in some schools, is conducted as a popular and successful elective.
As in previous years, The Herald's School Newspaper Resource Booklet is a comprehensive guide to newspaper production, from editorial content to advertising, with specific links to the Board of Studies curriculum. It is appropriate for both primary and secondary students.
Cluster workshops with Herald staff
Training and support measures such as cluster workshop days will also be conducted. During these workshops, students will have the opportunity to learn media skills such as reporting, photography and cartooning from Herald staff.
If your school is interested in hosting a cluster workshop day, please contact Richard at rfrench@theherald.com.au
