2010 Competition

Welcome to the Newcastle Herald's Newspapers in Education website and the 2010 Herald and Newcastle Permanent Building Society School Newspaper Competition.

The Newcastle Herald and Newcastle Permanent Building Society School Newspaper Competition offers primary and secondary schools the chance to publish their own newspapers within The Herald.

Students who participate obtain valuable first-hand media experience, feel the thrill of seeing their work published and enter the running for prizes from the major sponsor the Newcastle Permanent Building Society.

The competition can be undertaken by whole-class groups, special-interest groups, as a GATS challenge, as a teacher/librarian initiative; the options are virtually unlimited.

Schools that enter will be supported by an extensive resource booklet and/or 10-week unit of work, Making the News, which was prepared in consultation with representatives from the Department of Education, Catholic Schools Office and an independent college.

Schools will also be sent class sets of newspapers twice a week in the 10-week period leading up to their newspapers publication, to assist in media studies exercises, and will receive up to 550 copies on the day their entry is published.

A Herald journalist can visit schools to work with students and the co-ordinating teacher.
It is strongly suggested that schools attempt to take advantage of a visit from the school newspaper competition co-ordinator Richard French before they begin work on their entry to be fully informed about the requirements of the competition and how to submit their material in the correct form.

All schools will also have the chance to visit Fairfax Regional Printers at Beresfield, where The Herald is printed, a unique opportunity to see a working printing press in action.

An entry form that can be faxed back to 4979-5988 can be found in the resources section of this website and co-ordinating teachers should also read the brief rundown on the competition requirements and how to maximise the quality of your entry.
