Painting a fine picture

NEWCASTLE City Council is set to consider increasing its anti-graffiti budget by $100,000 ("Carrying the can" Herald 29/7).

That, of course, is $100,000 of ratepayers' money.

When council-owned buildings are attacked with graffiti, we should appreciate that these are our buildings.

A Newcastle spray-can retailer, Patsan Dance Music Specialists, says Newcastle City Council is a customer.

Although the spray cans are supposed to be used for legitimate artistic purposes, it is reasonable to wonder if they are only used for these purposes.

I can imagine the ludicrous situation of the public buying spray cans, via the council, only to then fork out more money to have the resultant graffiti removed.

Whilst travelling up through Queensland recently, we visited a couple of beachside towns which displayed signs stating that "graffiti will not be tolerated, large fines for doing so". We did not see any ugly graffiti anywhere, so obviously this law is enforced, it was a pleasure to be in such beautiful surroundings and we definitely will be back. Why on Earth can't the same be done here in Lake Macqurarie and Newcastle - make those responsible pay, not the ratepayers.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. This is me laughing. You're complaining about graffiti. Have you noticed what building that is? It's the old post office. How about you pencil- pushers do something about the run-down abandoned buildings in Newcastle and worry about the graffiti when you're finished. I think people would rather see tags than homes for squatters.
