IN the federal budget, $500 million was set aside for developing fuel-efficient cars in Australia.
Already $35 million has been given to Toyota for their new hybrid cars.
Could I suggest that the $465 million remaining should now be offered to develop an Australian electric car industry to produce inexpensive, fully electric cars, buses and trucks and other vehicles.
We don't need the Tesla Roadster at $100,000 plus, but something more like the fully electric REVA car launched in India recently.
We already have a company here that could take this on and the NRMA has just asked to speed up development of electric cars.
The Government should tell the Australian people how that money is going to be spent.
