 From breeder to pound

From breeder to pound

19/08/2008 9:55:00 AM
I HOPE Jesse Russell (SMS 16/8) plans to rescue the puppies she believes she should be able to breed that end up in our already overflowing pounds and RSPCA shelters.

A lot of people buy puppies, not realising the responsibility involved. Or their circumstances change and they can no longer take care of the dog. Or, of course, the puppy just grows up and the cute factor is gone.

People should be encouraged to adopt from the pounds, shelters and rescue groups, such as Hunter Animal Rescue, before buying puppies from backyard breeders whose dogs are not desexed. Many thousands of dogs and cats are killed each year in Australia because there are so many animals and not enough good homes.

Barking Mad is using this election to make it easier to keep a pet. We are lobbying for a fair share of public space and rating each candidate on these questions: 1. Given that about 40% of households own a dog, and given that the Local Government Act requires councils to equitably supply services, will you use your vote in council to make about 40% of parks, beaches and other recreation areas open to free use by dog owners and their dogs? 2. Through council, will you urge the State government to allow pet owners in need of public transport to use buses, trains and ferries with their pet? 3. Do you agree that responsible tenants should have more legal protection against discrimination by landlords on the grounds of pet ownership? (Victoria has such legislation.) 4. What will you do to ensure that responsible pet owners are represented at council and are given equitable access to community resources?
