End of road for truckies

5/08/2008 9:07:00 AM
IT is time for the trucking industry to wake up to reality.

High fuel prices, government over-regulation and running costs may be beyond the industry's control, but pricing is not.

Retailers and other clients placing price pressure on truckies are following the laws of supply and demand when it comes to heavy road freight capacity in Australia, there is a massive oversupply.

Low haulage prices are the result of undercutting the industry is its own worst enemy.

Road transport is overdue for the sort of consolidation that has swept through most industries, bringing higher profits and lower costs to those who survive.

There are too many operators with too many trucks.
