Antram lining up district double

NELSON Bay bowls manager Terry Antram will be chasing his second Newcastle district championship at Raymond Terrace on Saturday.

Antram, who transferred from St Johns Park in March, will play Jamie Minter (Beresfield) in the final of the Newcastle district champion of club champions singles title.

Antram, who has been in sparkling form since winning the Newcastle district pairs title with Craig Hines last month, has accounted for two past Newcastle district major singles champions in reaching the final.

Antram downed 2007 winner David Govan (Toronto Workers) 31-15 in the quarter-finals then beat 2006 champion and fellow NSW representative Jason Stokes (Raymond Terrace) 31-25 in the semi-finals.

Stokes also won the champion of champions singles title in 2004 and 2005.

Minter reached the decider by beating Paul Poidevin (Kahibah) 31-17 in the quarter-finals then downing Trevor Aitchison (Cardiff) 31-18 in the semis.

Minter and Aitchison eliminated past winners in earlier rounds.

Minter defeated 2002 champion David Evans (Alder Park) 31-27 in the second round, and Aitchison beat 1999 winner Glenn Brown (Dora Creek Workers) 31-28 in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, the state presidents singles championship starts at Soldiers Point tomorrow.

Stuart Clarke (Bar Beach) will meet Athol Dent (Bombala RSL) in the opening round.

Wallsend duo Brad Clark and Ian Shearer will feature in the state presidents pairs on Saturday at Soldiers Point.
