John Hunter Hospital may raise parking fees

John Hunter Hospital may raise parking fees

27/08/2008 11:39:00 PM
HUNTER New England Health is considering increasing the amount it charges staff and visitors for parking at three hospital sites, including the John Hunter Hospital, in what it says is an effort to encourage parking turnover.

It comes as the area health service earned about $1.8 million from parking charges and about $20,000 from fines in the past financial year, almost all of which came from the busy Rankin Park campus.

The service would not provide precise revenue figures to The Herald. Instead it said the 2007-08 gross revenue was "relatively steady" on the previous financial year's takings.

But money earned from fines dipped in the past year to half the 2006-07 total.

The Rankin Park campus, which also includes the Royal Newcastle Centre and the Children's Hospital, and where about 8000 vehicles compete for 2600 car parks a day, brought in 95 per cent of the 2007-08 revenue.

The James Fletcher and Maitland hospitals accounted for the other 5 per cent.

Hunter New England corporate services service director James Brown said that the parking and fines revenue combined was less than 0.15 per cent of the health service's total annual operating budget of $1.3 billion.

The service was aware that parking availability was an ongoing issue for the community.

"That's why we are always looking at ways to ease congestion and encourage turnover of parking spaces so people coming to the hospital have a better chance of finding a park no matter what time of day," he said.

As part of this, the service was "reviewing" fees for staff and visitors at the hospital sites and planned to consult staff and union representatives before introducing any changes.

Health Services Union spokesman Peter Rumball said he was unaware of the review but it was unlikely the service would opt to reduce the fees.

CURRENT DAILY PARKING FEES

Visitors: John Hunter $4; James Fletcher $4;

Maitland $2.20

Staff: Fees are deducted fortnightly based on salary ranges and the location of the parking lot staff choose to use. Cost is from $6 to $14 a week.

How can charging more increase turnover? "If I'm paying more for a parking spot I'm staying longer to get my value" would be the attitude. Shorter stay times would increase turnover, or building more parking spaces would help ease the problem, or running a shuttle bus like that from Energy Australia stadium and advertising the fact may help, but increasing charges only increases revenue. What an insult to the intelligence of the community.

LOLOL Well I have complained to the last running member and he had tried for years to sort out this problem. Even tried with the new member and still no good. I had a grandson vomiting all over me the car - couldn't walk the poor little thing. Yes you get five minutes to drop off, who gets in there within that time NOT MANY. Lucky I saw a friend there at the time of arriving so she waited with my grandson but I ended up telling her that could she please take him in and get them to ring me as I have got into a carpark and there isn't room and now I am explaining why I need to get out of the park. The person sent me to No 4 park, well that's another issue. It wouldn't open, then when I pressed the buzzer she opened it as I had the coupon and I ended up way down at the bottom of that park as someone was just leaving. Now if I didn't have someone, how was I to get that child up there? I have trouble with my breathing due to an illness. I couldnt just leave him at door, I couldn't carry him. What I got in reply was we are trying as we have biult that new carpark. Get real. I said allow at least two car parks per bed in hospital and then allow 100 for the treatment areas. No it cannot be done.

My son was in hospital the other week and we had to stay there with him. We spent more than $100 in three days just on food and parking alone. It is ridiculous that fees are increasing. The price of everything else at the hospital is already too high. People are sick when they go to the hospital. They have to pay for doctors and medication. Don't make them pay more just for somewhere to put their car!

If parking was charged by the minute then turnover may increase. Is the real aim to reduce how long visitors attend their loved ones? Maybe they should instigate "no standing" and "time limits" in the emergency ward!
